> The Dollar Index closed at 102.21 on Oct. 9 after rising 0.07%, while USD/JPY gained about 0.48% over the week based on midpoint calculations.

The U.S. dollar gained through Oct. 9, while USD/JPY rose to 158.33–158.34, indicating renewed weakness for the yen against the dollar.

The Dollar Index closed at 102.21 on Oct. 9, up 0.07% for the day and about 0.3% for the week. The index measures the dollar against a basket of six major currencies.

USD/JPY stood at 157.57–157.59 at 4 a.m. ET (8 a.m. UTC) on Oct. 2, based on the 5 p.m. Japan Standard Time market observation. At the same time on Oct. 9, the pair was 158.33–158.34.

Using the midpoint of each range, USD/JPY rose about 0.48% over the week. That indicates an approximately 0.48% decline in the yen’s value against the dollar.

The move extended a broader rise in the pair. USD/JPY was 157.48–157.50 on Sept. 18 and 158.09–158.11 on Sept. 25 before reaching the Oct. 9 range.

A higher USD/JPY rate means one dollar buys more yen, signaling weakness in the Japanese currency. The exchange-rate observations are taken at a specific Tokyo-market time, while the Dollar Index uses a separate market close, so the weekly comparisons are not synchronized.
