> WTI crude rose 2.06% to $93.74 a barrel, while storage-chip and optical-communications stocks fell sharply and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.44%.

U.S. stocks finished mixed Monday as higher oil prices lifted energy shares while storage-chip and optical-communications stocks led declines across technology markets.

WTI crude futures rose $1.89, or 2.06%, to $93.74 a barrel. Brent crude gained 1.84% to $106.65. Energy stocks led the S&P 500’s 11 sectors with a 1.48% advance.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.38% to 51,850.55. The S&P 500 slipped 0.06% to 7,807.24, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.44% to 27,245.90. The VIX rose 2.49% to 15.21.

Technology shares faced heavier pressure than the major indexes suggested. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell nearly 2.7% to 12,236.79, its lowest level in three weeks.

Micron Technology fell 3.9%, SanDisk dropped nearly 6%, and SK Hynix and Super Micro Computer each lost more than 4%. Seagate Technology declined more than 3%.

Optical-communications stocks also retreated. Ciena fell 10%, Lumentum dropped 9.8%, Coherent declined 7.9%, Corning lost 6% and Lumen Technologies fell 4.3%. Marvell Technology dropped 3.4%, while Cisco Systems declined 2.6%.

The stocks had posted strong gains on expectations for artificial-intelligence data-center demand and orders. Nvidia and Cisco also announced a USFP pluggable optical-connection solution targeting 400 gigabits per second per channel, but the announcement did not halt the sector’s decline.

Higher oil prices renewed concerns about inflation and interest rates. The implied probability of a Federal Reserve rate increase of at least 25 basis points in October rose to nearly 22%, compared with 17.7% Friday.

Exxon Mobil and Chevron each gained nearly 2%. Meta Platforms rose 3.38% after introducing its Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full models. Microsoft advanced 1.12% after unveiling its Maia 300 artificial-intelligence inference chip and outlining plans for large-scale deployment beginning next year.

U.S. Treasury cash markets were closed Monday for Columbus Day. The latest available yields were 4.789% for the two-year note and 5.243% for the 10-year note.

Major U.S. banks were scheduled to begin releasing third-quarter results Tuesday, Oct. 13, with attention on net interest income, loan-loss provisions, deposit costs and investment-banking and trading performance. Apple also scheduled a product event for Tuesday.
