> U.S. spot bitcoin stayed at a discount to offshore markets even as Coinbase Prime volume rose 9.6%. CME positioning remained short-heavy, while VIX and the dollar index were little changed.

U.S. spot bitcoin continued to trade below offshore markets, while institutional execution picked up. Trading activity improved, but the price gap has not yet shifted back toward a U.S. buying premium.

As of Oct. 14, the Coinbase premium was -0.0900%. It stood at -0.0935% on Oct. 10, widened to -0.1132% on Oct. 11 and -0.1313% on Oct. 12, then narrowed to -0.0806% on Oct. 13 before slipping again on Oct. 14.

A negative reading means U.S. spot bitcoin is trading cheaper than overseas markets. The discount has narrowed from its recent low, but it has not turned positive, suggesting U.S. spot demand remains weak.

Coinbase Prime, an institutional trading venue, recorded 5,191.47 BTC in daily volume on Oct. 13. That was up 9.6% from 4,737.90 BTC on Oct. 12, while 24-hour volume in dollar terms was about $395.20 million.

Prime is closer to a venue where institutions actually execute trades. The increase in volume points to more institutional execution than the previous day, but alongside the spot discount it looks more like a limited recovery in activity than aggressive buying pressure.

Leveraged fund positioning in CME bitcoin futures, disclosed weekly by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, showed 5,731 long contracts and 12,583 short contracts as of Oct. 6. Shorts were about 2.2 times longs, keeping positioning tilted to the downside.

The VIX, a gauge of U.S. equity-market stress, was 15.33 on Oct. 14. It rose 0.06 from 15.27 on Oct. 13, while the recent series moved slightly higher from 15.08 on Oct. 7 to 15.33 on Oct. 14.

The VIX shows how much stress is being priced into U.S. equities. Readings below 20 are generally seen as relatively calm, so the current level does not suggest equity volatility is a major pressure point for crypto weakness.

The dollar index was 102.21 on Oct. 14, up 0.03 from 102.18 the previous day. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was 5.24% as of Oct. 9.

A stronger dollar or higher yields can weigh on risk assets such as bitcoin. The dollar was little changed on the day, but the yield level remains a background burden for risk appetite.

U.S. sentiment has not yet clearly shifted toward buying dominance. The rise in Prime volume is constructive, but as long as the Coinbase premium remains negative, a move back into positive territory is the next point to watch.
