> Coplan said event contracts have no exponential upside. Winning Polymarket shares pay $1 at resolution.

Polymarket founder and CEO Shayne Coplan criticized the pursuit of crypto tokens promising 100-fold gains, arguing that event contracts tie a trade to a defined outcome instead of a token’s potential price surge.

Coplan made the remarks during a fireside chat with Balaji Srinivasan at TOKEN2049. The session ran from 9:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET Oct. 6 (1:30 to 2 a.m. UTC Oct. 7), corresponding to the morning of Oct. 7 in Singapore.

He criticized a strategy of buying a token considered worthless while hoping to sell before it falls to zero. Coplan said Polymarket trades have “no exponential upside,” presenting them as a different kind of wager from chasing large token gains.

Polymarket contracts are tied to whether a specified event occurs. A winning share pays $1 when the market resolves. That payout describes what a winning share pays at resolution; it does not establish that the market’s forecast is accurate or that prediction markets make crypto prices more stable.

Before resolution, Polymarket generally displays the midpoint between the bid and ask. If the spread exceeds $0.10, the platform uses the last traded price instead. The displayed price can be read as an implied probability, but it reflects trading activity and does not guarantee the outcome.

The seven-day volume figures published Oct. 7 put Polymarket’s prediction volume at $1.21 billion and Kalshi’s at $2.3 billion. The figures show activity on the two platforms, but do not establish how accurately their markets forecast events or whether prediction trading affects crypto volatility.
