Morgan Stanley projects global hyperscaler and neocloud investment in AI computing will reach $1.583 trillion in 2027, a cycle the bank says would contribute about 24% of S&P 500 revenue growth that year.

The estimate combines $1.388 trillion in cash capital spending with $195 billion in lease investment. The bank’s model puts the total at $978 billion in 2026 and $1.812 trillion in 2028, with the pace of growth slowing after 2027.

The projected effect on the S&P 500 depends on how the spending flows to suppliers and companies adopting AI. Morgan Stanley estimates that about 65% of the 2027 investment, or roughly $1.029 trillion, would map to S&P 500 companies as supplier revenue. That amount would equal about 4.9% of projected index revenue.

The model estimates direct AI investment would add about 2 percentage points to S&P 500 revenue growth, raising it from roughly 6.6% to 8.6%. That contribution represents about 24% of the projected growth rate, rather than 24% of total index revenue.

A separate analysis of 42 AI enablers and adopters assigns the group about 78% of projected S&P 500 profit growth in 2027 and about 37% of projected net profit. The 78% figure is a share of profit growth, not a share of total profits.

The lease figures also cover different periods. The 2027 estimate includes $195 billion in lease investment, while $1.118 trillion in signed but unfulfilled lease commitments spans future periods. The commitment total is not a one-year spending forecast.

Morgan Stanley’s July outlook put capital spending by the five largest U.S. technology companies at nearly $800 billion in 2026, about $1.2 trillion in 2027 and $1.4 trillion in 2028. Because the October projection includes a broader group of companies and lease investment, it cannot be directly compared with July’s estimate.
