> At 12:35 p.m. ET, the indexes were up 0.6% and 1.4%, respectively, while the Dow was little changed and most stocks outside technology and AI were lower.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite advanced at midday Oct. 19, but most U.S. stocks outside technology and artificial intelligence fell, leaving gains concentrated in those sectors on the 39th anniversary of Black Monday.

At 12:35 p.m. ET (16:35 UTC), the S&P 500 was up 0.6% and the Nasdaq Composite had gained 1.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was little changed after moving between gains and losses. Those figures were a snapshot of trading before the session closed.

Online warnings of another Black Monday had circulated ahead of the anniversary. On Oct. 19, 1987, the Dow lost 508 points, or 22.6%, in a single session.

Today’s [market-wide trading safeguards](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/investing/34526>) use declines in the S&P 500 from its previous close. A drop of 7% or 13% before 3:25 p.m. ET (19:25 UTC) triggers a trading pause of at least 15 minutes. A 20% decline ends trading for the day.

Third-quarter earnings results were still limited. As of Oct. 16, 9% of S&P 500 companies had reported. The 29.0% year-over-year earnings growth rate combines those results with estimates for companies that have yet to report.
