> The estimated range spans returns, earnings growth and capital spending. A separate market-value group included eight utilities.

A 42-stock AI group contributed an estimated 60% to 80% across S&P 500 returns, earnings growth and capital spending since January 2024, while a separate 41-company group represented 48.68% of market value.

The 42-stock group's estimated contributions across S&P 500 market returns, earnings growth and capital spending spanned 60% to 80% over that period. The range describes the three measures collectively; it does not assign the same percentage to each one.

A calculation published Oct. 11 put the separate 41-company group's share of combined market capitalization at 48.68%. The remaining companies accounted for 51.32%. The group is an analyst-defined category, rather than an official S&P 500 sector.

The two figures describe different things. The 42-stock measure tracks contributions accumulated since January 2024, while the 41-company measure describes a share of market value in one calculation. The 48.68% figure therefore does not show how much of the index's return came from those 41 companies.

The 41-company group includes 29 businesses classified as directly involved in AI, eight utilities and four capital-equipment companies. That mix extends the category beyond companies developing AI products. Its composition also matters when comparing its market-value share with groups used in other calculations.

An [earlier account of the 41-company market-value estimate](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/investing/28349>) covered its near-half share.

The S&P 500 weights its members by float-adjusted market capitalization, giving companies with greater publicly traded market value more influence on the index. A group's share of combined company value and its contribution to returns are both ways to examine concentration, but they answer different questions.

In a reconstructed historical comparison, the 41-company group's roughly 49% share ranked below only the 19th-century railroad boom among the periods examined. That ranking depends on the selected group and the historical comparison; it is not an official S&P 500 sector ranking.
