> The currency closed at NT$32.617 per U.S. dollar as foreign investors net sold about NT$79.5 billion in Taiwanese shares.

The New Taiwan dollar fell to its weakest close since mid-April 2025 on Tuesday as foreign investors net sold Taiwanese stocks, extending pressure on the island’s currency.

The currency closed at NT$32.617 per U.S. dollar, compared with NT$32.445 on Monday. It weakened as far as NT$32.672 during Tuesday’s trading before recovering some ground by the close. A higher exchange-rate figure means it takes more New Taiwan dollars to buy one U.S. dollar.

Taiwan’s benchmark stock index fell more than 500 points Tuesday. Foreign investors net sold about NT$79.5 billion in local shares that day.

The selling followed a period of substantial capital outflows. From Oct. 12 to Oct. 16, foreign investors net sold $19.4 billion in Taiwanese equities and moved a net $17.96 billion out of Taiwan. The New Taiwan dollar declined 1.37% against the U.S. dollar over those five days.

Taiwan’s central bank said Oct. 19 it would monitor global financial conditions and foreign capital flows, adjusting its currency-market operations as supply and demand warranted.
