> The average for the four weeks ended Sept. 26 was revised to 26,000 jobs a week from 24,750.

ADP's preliminary estimate put U.S. private-sector hiring at an average of 18,500 jobs a week over the four weeks ended Oct. 3, down from the prior reading and pointing to slower hiring.

The Oct. 20 reading compares with a revised 26,000 jobs a week for the four weeks ended Sept. 26. That figure was first published at 24,750 on Oct. 13. The revision raised the baseline for comparing the two periods.

The latest estimate is 7,500 jobs a week below the revised Sept. 26 figure. Both readings are seasonally adjusted four-week moving averages, so the Oct. 3 number describes the average pace across the four-week period, not hiring in a single week.

The preliminary figures can change as more payroll data become available. The two measurement periods overlap: each covers four weeks, and their end dates are one week apart. The comparison therefore tracks a change in the rolling average.

ADP's next weekly update is scheduled for Oct. 27.
