> A separate tanker encounter off Oman involved military forces, with no fire or mine strike documented.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Tuesday that mines laid by its navy set two oil tankers ablaze on a route south of the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping remains far below pre-conflict levels.

The Guard said the tankers stopped after striking mines along a passage it called unauthorized. In a second statement Tuesday, the Guard said a mine ignited a supertanker south of the strait with more than 2 million barrels of crude oil aboard. The Guard named no vessels in either statement.

Separately, military forces interacted with one tanker about 121 nautical miles east of Duqm, Oman, on Tuesday. No fire or mine strike was documented in that encounter, which had no established link to the Guard’s claims.

Ships made 254 crossings through the strait during the seven days ending Oct. 14, roughly 70% fewer than before the conflict. The waterway carried a severe threat rating on Oct. 18, and mariners were warned to watch for attempted mining near shipping lanes.

The latest claims follow a separate Oct. 17 Guard claim that two supertankers struck mines. That earlier claim had no substantiation as of Oct. 18.
