> Exports to the United States rose 22.9% from a year earlier, while semiconductor exports climbed 49.4% by value.

Japan’s exports grew 16.7% in September from a year earlier, below a 20.1% market forecast, putting slower trade growth in focus ahead of the Bank of Japan’s next policy meeting.

Export growth slowed for a second straight month after reaching a near four-year high in July.

Semiconductor exports rose 49.4% by value from a year earlier, while exports of semiconductor-related machinery rose 43.9%. Those gains came even as overall export growth fell below the market forecast.

Exports to the United States increased 22.9% from a year earlier, compared with an 8.6% rise in shipments to China. Imports grew 18.9% from a year earlier.

Exports have supported Japan’s economic growth this year, making the slower pace relevant to markets watching the yen and interest rates. The Bank of Japan is set to meet the following week.
