> Decentralized exchanges processed $232.226 billion in spot trades over 30 days. Tracked crypto hacks totaled $2.345 billion across 305 incidents in 2026 through Oct. 21.

Decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols held $92.83 billion on Oct. 21, giving a snapshot of assets in smart contracts while trading activity and security losses measured different parts of the crypto market.

The Ethereum network accounted for $51.076 billion, more than half the total. Base held $6.366 billion and Solana held $6.036 billion. Those figures show where assets were held at the time of the snapshot; they do not show how much users deposited that day.

Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) processed $232.226 billion in spot trades over the rolling 30-day period shown Oct. 21. Uniswap recorded $71.136 billion of that volume. Trading volume adds up transactions over time, while the $92.83 billion locked-value figure measures assets at a single point.

Total value locked, or TVL, assigns a dollar value to assets held in DeFi smart contracts. Changes in token prices can move that dollar total even when users make no deposits or withdrawals. The Oct. 21 reading therefore cannot establish how much new capital entered DeFi during the preceding month.

Spot trading volume has a different limit. The same assets can change hands repeatedly during a 30-day period, adding to the transaction total each time. The $232.226 billion figure measures trading turnover, rather than deposits into protocols or assets still held there at the end of the period.

Security losses cover a broader market and a longer period. Tracked crypto hacks totaled $2.345 billion across 305 incidents from the start of 2026 through Oct. 21. The tally includes exchange and infrastructure cases, so the full amount cannot be treated as losses at DeFi protocols.

That loss figure also does not subtract funds recovered or frozen. It cannot establish the net amount lost across crypto or a DeFi-only loss total.
