> Coinbase Prime volume rose to 9,933.73 BTC, but a negative Coinbase premium and heavier short positioning leave a recovery in U.S. buying demand unconfirmed.

Bitcoin continued to trade at a discount on Coinbase relative to Binance, suggesting subdued U.S. buying demand. Coinbase Prime trading volume rose sharply, but the increase alone does not establish a recovery in institutional buying.

The rise in activity at the institutional trading venue came as the U.S. price discount persisted. Greater participation has yet to provide clear evidence of stronger buying demand.

The Coinbase premium stood at -0.18% on October 30. Recent daily readings moved from -0.18% on October 26 to -0.14% on October 27 and -0.12% on October 28, before falling to -0.27% on October 29 and recovering to -0.18% on October 30.

A positive premium indicates a higher bitcoin price on Coinbase than on Binance; a negative reading indicates a discount. The discount narrowed in the latest daily reading, but its persistence suggests U.S. demand remained relatively subdued.

Coinbase Prime, an institutional trading venue, recorded 9,933.73 BTC in trading volume on October 29, up sharply from 5,150.06 BTC on October 28. Its dollar-denominated 24-hour trading volume was approximately $368.10 million.

The higher volume indicates increased institutional trading activity. Volume alone, however, does not identify whether buying or selling drove that activity. Alongside the negative Coinbase premium, it offers insufficient evidence of stronger buying conviction.

CME bitcoin futures positions held by leveraged funds totaled 5,466 long contracts and 10,408 short contracts as of October 20, according to weekly CFTC disclosures. Short positions exceeded long positions, although the reporting lag limits what the figures reveal about current positioning.

The VIX rose to 18.44 on October 30 from 17.20 on October 29, an increase of 1.24 points. It had declined from 19.45 on October 23 to 16.91 on October 28 before rebounding.

The index measures volatility expectations in U.S. equities. Its recent rebound suggests a less settled market backdrop, offering limited support for interpreting the increase in institutional crypto trading as stronger risk appetite.

The dollar index, which tracks the dollar against major currencies, fell to 101.68 on October 30 from 102.04 the previous day. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.05% as of October 28. The weaker dollar eased one potential headwind for risk assets, while Treasury yields remained part of the broader market backdrop.

Taken together, the indicators point to increased trading activity without clear confirmation of renewed U.S. buying strength. A sustained narrowing of the Coinbase discount alongside continued institutional activity would provide clearer evidence of a change in demand.

[Editor's note] Wall Street liquidity radar examines U.S. bitcoin sentiment through CME leveraged-fund positioning, the Coinbase premium, VIX volatility and Coinbase Prime trading volume. Together, these indicators offer a view of futures positioning, relative spot demand, equity-market uncertainty and institutional trading activity.
