[Editor's note] Options are derivatives used to take leveraged positions on an underlying asset or hedge existing exposure. Calls give holders the right to buy at a predetermined price, while puts give holders the right to sell. Open interest measures outstanding contracts and indicates the accumulated size of positions.

Comparing call and put shares across open interest and volume helps distinguish accumulated positioning from shorter-term trading activity. A larger call share alone does not establish the purpose of those positions, as options can also form part of hedging strategies.
