> Fifty-seven percent of respondents said high prices had eroded their standard of living, the highest share since May.

U.S. consumer confidence rose about 6% in a preliminary November survey, but high living costs remained the leading concern as the reading stayed 10% below its February level.

Fifty-seven percent of respondents said high prices had eroded their standard of living, the highest share since May. That was up from 46% before the Iran conflict began in February. Consumers also expressed growing concern about an artificial intelligence bubble, though living costs remained their top concern.

Improvements in personal-finance and business-condition measures were concentrated among independent voters. Confidence also rose among lower- and middle-wealth consumers, while it fell 5% among high-wealth consumers with large stock holdings after recent stock-market volatility.

Consumers’ one-year inflation expectations fell to 4.3% from 4.7% in October, their lowest level since August. The reading remained above February’s 3.4% and every reading in 2024. Long-term inflation expectations eased to 3.4% from 3.5%, still above the 2.8% to 3.2% range recorded in 2024. Responses were collected from Oct. 20 to Nov. 2.
