> Nearly half of U.S. consumers use AI, but only 4.5% had paid subscriptions to ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude in August 2026.

Andreessen Horowitz partner Olivia Moore said consumer AI is still driven largely by work-oriented users, while its business model remains heavily dependent on subscriptions and usage fees.

The firm’s seventh consumer AI report, published Oct. 5, found that 25% of U.S. consumers use AI daily. In August 2026, 4.5% of eligible consumers in a U.S. e-receipt panel had an active paid personal subscription to ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude, up from 2.1% a year earlier.

Spending was concentrated among a small group. The top 1% of AI spenders accounted for 19.5% of observed consumer AI spending and paid an average of $903 per month. The median AI payer spent $25 per month, while spending by the top group rose 80% over 18 months.

“Almost all of what we think of as consumer AI, I would argue, is prosumer AI,” Moore said, describing users who apply AI to coding, automation, productivity and creative work.

The report’s web ranking showed that 84% of 44 AI-native products offered paid subscriptions, while 64% charged for usage or extra credits. Advertising appeared in 14% of the products, and 2% used transaction or platform fees. Products could use more than one monetization model.

Moore said advertising and transaction-based models could help expand access to users who do not want to pay directly. She also pointed to personal agents as a possible future source of transaction revenue, although the agents discussed had not begun charging transaction fees.

“I’m more interested in getting back to a world where the consumer is monetized in a way that isn’t subscription dollars out of their own pocket,” Moore said.

ChatGPT remained the leading product in the report’s measurements. It recorded roughly twice Gemini’s web visits in August and had 2.5 times Gemini’s monthly active mobile users. ChatGPT also had three times as many U.S. consumer paid subscribers as Claude or Gemini.

The report found that only 13% of users who paid for one AI product also paid for at least one other tool. Twenty-nine of the 50 vendors ranked by consumer spending did not appear on the web or mobile traffic lists, highlighting the gap between usage and monetization.

“It’s definitely very early,” Moore said when asked whether true consumer AI has emerged.
