Bill Gates estimates that moving toward an economy shaped by artificial intelligence (AI) could take about 20 years, a broad timeline that puts potential effects on jobs and cyberattacks much closer.

The Microsoft co-founder and former CEO gave the estimate in an interview published Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. ET (14:00 UTC). He called 20 years “a reasonably safe number,” while allowing that the transition could take somewhat less or more time. Gates is chairman of the Gates Foundation.

The estimate concerns a wide economic shift, rather than a fixed date for a particular technology or industry. Gates described a future in which AI and robotics could make many goods and services more abundant. His timeline is an estimate, not a firm schedule for when that transition will be complete.

Gates also forecast significant negative effects on the job market and from cyberattacks within two to three years. That outlook is relative to the interview; it does not specify calendar years. In an earlier warning, he said AI could contribute to more cyberattacks over the following year, including extortion and attempts to move stock or betting markets. He described robots building homes, growing food and performing surgery as possible future capabilities if AI development is not greatly slowed or stopped. Gates presented those examples as possibilities, saying they could reduce the need for human labor across most goods and services. He did not describe them as current capabilities.

In an Aug. 26 essay, Gates wrote that AI could reshape law, customer service, medicine, software and manufacturing over a decade. That industry-level timeframe differs from the roughly 20 years he gave for the broader economic transition. The two estimates address different scopes: changes across specific fields and a wider shift toward greater abundance.

Gates’ comments place near-term concerns about workers and cyberattacks alongside a longer-range view of how AI and robotics could change production and services. His estimate leaves room for the broader transition to unfold faster or more slowly.
