> His Q3 2026 letter estimated a few percent of U.S. GDP in annual revenue may be needed to break even on capital already invested, rising to 10% for capital analysts expect to be invested by 2030.

Harris Kupperman, founder and chief investment officer of Praetorian Capital, estimated that AI may need annual revenue equal to 10% of U.S. gross domestic product to break even on capital analysts expect to be invested by 2030.

In the Q3 2026 investor letter dated Wednesday, Oct. 21, Kupperman put the revenue threshold for capital already invested at a few percent of U.S. GDP. The letter did not provide calculations for either estimate.

He estimated AI capital expenditures at roughly 3% of U.S. GDP as of Oct. 21 and predicted they would grow further in 2027. The estimates compare annual sales with the U.S. economy’s total output rather than set a target for a single company.

“The numbers just cannot work—especially as tech tends to be deflationary,” Kupperman wrote.

He said Praetorian had reduced exposure to businesses sensitive to GDP and built cash. The fund also held some Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) futures and call spreads; Kupperman did not disclose position sizes.

Kupperman expects industry rationalization but does not think AI development or the buildout will stop. He also forecast bankruptcies among neoclouds and large AI labs, along with a broader economic downturn if AI spending slows.

As of October 2026, core firms in the AI ecosystem had been profitable so far. Weaker or less durable investment and profitability could prompt a correction in AI asset prices, with leverage and concentrated exposures amplifying the effects.
