Hong Kong plans to let mainland investors trade Hong Kong-listed stocks directly in yuan before July 1, 2027, while expanding digital-asset settlement infrastructure for central bank digital currency.

The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) announced plans to add a yuan-denominated counter to Stock Connect, enabling mainland investors to buy and sell Hong Kong stocks directly with yuan.

The move will expand renminbi trading access in Hong Kong’s equity market. Stock Connect links mainland investors with Hong Kong-listed shares.

Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) President 余伟文 said CMU OmniClear is building a digital-asset platform targeted to support settlement with central bank digital currency by year-end. The platform is jointly owned by the HKMA and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing.

CMU OmniClear will also explore connections with tokenized deposits and compliant stablecoins. The yuan trading counter is expected before July 1, 2027, while the settlement platform’s target is the end of this year.
