The Senate is set to vote Thursday on a measure to end U.S. hostilities with Iran, as higher fuel costs add economic and political pressure ahead of the midterm elections.

The War Powers Resolution would direct President Donald Trump to remove U.S. troops from the conflict unless Congress explicitly authorizes the war. The measure is a concurrent resolution, meaning it does not carry the force of law and would not be sent to the president for signature.

Gas prices are averaging $4.48 per gallon nationwide. Diesel costs have also risen, increasing pressure on farmers and truckers and creating a political challenge for Republicans seeking to retain control of Congress.

The House passed the measure in July. The Senate vote requires 50 votes, and most Republicans are expected to oppose it despite increased Republican support for recent efforts to end the conflict.

The vote comes as lawmakers prepare to campaign through most of October, with the midterm elections less than six weeks away.
