# SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce Will Leave Agency on Oct. 2

Hester Peirce will leave the Securities and Exchange Commission on Oct. 2, removing one of the agency’s most prominent advocates for clearer cryptocurrency rules as its active membership falls to two.

The SEC will then consist of Chairman Paul S. Atkins and Commissioner Mark T. Uyeda. Peirce’s resignation takes effect in five days, and no successor has been identified.

Peirce, who joined the commission in January 2018, will become an associate professor at Regent University School of Law in November. Her academic work will cover securities regulation, financial markets, public policy and digital assets.

She was designated in 2025 to lead the SEC’s Crypto Task Force. The group is developing approaches to digital-asset regulation, including disclosure frameworks, registration pathways and distinctions between securities and non-securities.

Peirce’s departure is scheduled for Oct. 2, 2026.
