Japanese police arrested two people over alleged crypto theft totaling about $515,000, after suspects allegedly impersonated Osaka prefectural police and demanded that a woman transfer crypto assets to prove her innocence.

The suspects allegedly told the woman, who is in her 40s, that her bank card was connected to a 600 billion-yen fraud and money-laundering case. They then allegedly obtained crypto assets worth about 81 million yen.

Police suspect the operation was based in Cambodia. Known losses in fraud cases involving the two suspects totaled about 240 million yen, or roughly $1.526 million.

Police also suspect that the alleged operation’s leader may be a Chinese national.
