China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has indicated it intends to approve purchases of a newly released Nvidia chip by ByteDance, Alibaba and other Chinese companies, signaling a possible easing of China’s stance toward Nvidia hardware.

The chip is designed for high-end professional computers rather than the familiar data-center GPU. The specific model and purchase scale were not disclosed.

The possible purchases come after Beijing guided major technology companies to reduce Nvidia purchases and strengthened reviews of foreign chips as China seeks to develop its domestic semiconductor industry. Chinese companies have also pursued computing capacity through other channels.

ByteDance and Alibaba are among the companies with the largest artificial-intelligence capital expenditures globally. Any approval could affect Nvidia’s Chinese-market revenue outlook and shipments by Taiwanese server and component suppliers.

The possible decision would not by itself establish that purchases can proceed. Chinese authorities and Nvidia have not publicly responded, and it remains to be determined whether U.S. export controls would allow the transactions.
