# U.S. Ambassador Says Taiwan Policy Unchanged, Trump Pitched Arms to Xi

U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue said Sunday that Washington’s policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged after President Donald Trump’s talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, while disclosing that Trump once asked Xi whether China wanted to buy U.S. weapons.

Perdue said Trump and Xi discuss U.S. arms sales to Taiwan whenever they meet. He also described Trump as having emphasized that the United States sells weapons to countries around the world.

“We do not support Taiwan independence, and we do not support coercion,” Perdue said.

Perdue rejected the idea that Trump had taken a softer position toward Taiwan, saying the president had approved extensive arms sales to the island. His comments came after Xi’s visit to the United States last week, when Trump did not publicly restate Washington’s longstanding Taiwan position.

A $14 billion Taiwan arms package remains paused after a Trump-Xi meeting in May. Trump previously described arms sales to Taiwan as a negotiating tool, while Beijing has pressed Washington to halt them.

The United States is required under the Taiwan Relations Act to provide Taiwan with defense capabilities, but Washington has not committed to automatically sending troops if China attacks the island.
