# Trump Says U.S. Is Seriously Considering Diesel Export Ban

President Donald Trump said Sept. 27 that the administration is seriously considering a U.S. diesel-export ban as domestic fuel prices approach record highs, a move that could tighten global supplies and raise pressure on energy markets.

“We’re thinking about it very seriously,” Trump said during an exchange with a Fox News reporter at the Presidents Cup in Illinois. He added that the administration “may do it” and warned that restricting diesel exports can increase gasoline prices for U.S. drivers.

The national average diesel price was about $6.50 per gallon on Sept. 25, near the record $6.53 reached Sept. 22. Diesel is widely used by truckers, farmers and other businesses, making fuel costs an important factor for transportation and freight activity.

An export restriction could initially lower prices in some U.S. diesel markets but reduce refinery output if overseas sales become unavailable. That could lift global diesel prices and eventually put upward pressure on U.S. gasoline prices as refiners adjust.

No export ban or implementation date has been announced. The administration’s consideration comes as disruptions involving Russia, Ukraine, Iran and Middle Eastern supply routes add to pressure on global fuel markets.
