> Prosecutors allege Mercedes Henry used six Ameris Bank customers’ information to connect their accounts to Coinbase accounts controlled by alleged co-conspirators.

Mercedes Henry, a former Ameris Bank universal banker, faces federal charges alleging she used six customers’ account information to facilitate approximately $931,500 in transfers to Coinbase accounts controlled by alleged co-conspirators.

Prosecutors allege the transfers occurred on at least six occasions between September and November 2021, while Henry worked at multiple Ameris Bank locations in the Atlanta area. They also allege she received more than $1,000 for participating in the scheme.

A federal grand jury returned the indictment Sept. 22, 2026. Henry appeared in federal court Sept. 25, 2026, and faces charges of bank fraud, access device fraud and bribery.

“Henry allegedly stole sensitive information to facilitate nearly $1 million of fraudulent transfers from victims’ bank accounts to cryptocurrency accounts controlled by her co-conspirators,” U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg said.

Prosecutors allege Henry used six Ameris customers’ bank account numbers and other identifying information to link their accounts to Coinbase accounts. Coinbase is a cryptocurrency exchange that allows account holders to buy cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin (BTC). The allegations do not identify which cryptocurrencies, if any, were purchased.

“Ms. Henry and her conspirators allegedly stole consumers’ hard-earned money directly from their bank accounts,” FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Marlo Graham said.

Henry, 35, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, is presumed innocent unless convicted. The investigation is being handled by the FBI, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Cathelynn Tio is leading the prosecution.
