> Ripple appeared on the July 8, 2024 roster through payment operations director Rene Huijsen, but neither appears on the task force’s current composition.

Ripple is no longer listed on the Bank for International Settlements’ (BIS) Cross-border Payments Interoperability and Extension (PIE) task force, more than two years after payment operations director Rene Huijsen appeared on its membership roster.

The July 8, 2024 composition named Huijsen as a task-force member. The current list, which includes about 40 members, contains neither Huijsen nor Ripple. The BIS documents do not specify when the change occurred or why.

The Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures established the PIE task force in 2023 to advise on cross-border payment interoperability, access and operating hours. Its mandate also covers market conventions, industry practices, messaging standards, fast payments, pre-validation application programming interfaces and cross-border settlement.

The task force supports work under the G20 roadmap for improving cross-border payments. Its broader work includes extending access to payment systems, expanding operating hours and interlinking payment systems across borders. Participation does not constitute an endorsement of a member’s products, services or related business.

The membership change follows a BIS working paper published Sept. 2 that described a separate proof of concept using the XRP Ledger, or XRPL, to verify official statistics. The system recorded cryptographic fingerprints on XRPL while keeping the underlying data off-chain.

Under controlled test conditions, the prototype recorded median publication latency of three to five seconds and median verification latency of one to two seconds. The paper described the system as a proof of concept and said the approach could be adapted to other ledgers.

The paper’s disclaimer states that its views do not necessarily represent those of the BIS or its member central banks. The membership records and paper do not establish a connection between Ripple’s absence from the PIE task force and the XRPL research, nor do they show that Ripple commissioned, reviewed or shaped the paper.

Ripple’s former participation reflected industry involvement in the BIS-led initiative, but it did not indicate BIS endorsement of Ripple, XRP or XRPL.
