Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov said BRICS members are not opposed to using the U.S. dollar for cross-border trade, even as the bloc favors national currencies as alternatives.

Alipov said the dollar would remain one of the primary currencies used for trade within BRICS. He described national currencies as additional payment options for the bloc’s members.

No BRICS member spoke about ending reliance on the dollar at the September summit, Alipov said. At the 18th BRICS summit in India, members discussed greater use of local currencies, while no member spoke about ending reliance on the dollar.

The comments add to the bloc’s discussion of payment options.
