> The president did not specify what he would double. Seoul is still assessing whether the $50 billion project is commercially viable and meets domestic legal requirements.

President Donald Trump threatened to raise South Korea’s costs if it does not soon join the $50 billion Alaska liquefied natural gas project, adding pressure to an investment plan Seoul has not finalized.

“If they don’t want to do it, that’s OK with me. I’ll just charge them more,” Trump told reporters Friday. He added that if South Korea did not sign shortly, he would “double it up,” without specifying what he meant to double.

South Korea is assessing the project, with any participation dependent on its commercial viability and compliance with domestic legal procedures. The difference between Trump’s announcement and Seoul’s position leaves the scale of South Korea’s commitment unsettled.

Trump separately announced an $8.4 billion enhanced oil recovery project, which uses methods such as carbon dioxide injection to increase crude production from an oil field. The announcement adds to the investment package even as South Korea continues reviewing the Alaska LNG project.
