President Donald Trump said the United States and Iran are engaged in productive discussions and ruled out an attack on Iran before the Nov. 3 midterm elections.

Trump said Iran remains in a severe economic and military position, while a blockade continues to operate. He also said 22 million barrels of oil moved through the Strait of Hormuz the previous night, with no barrels originating from or destined for Iran.

Trump said the United States would not attack Iran at any point before the elections. He added that Iran will not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.

The statement links the security situation around Iran, the Strait of Hormuz and global energy flows to a specific U.S. political deadline: the midterm elections on Nov. 3.
