> Debate over postponing cryptocurrency taxation is intensifying, with overseas transaction data and delays to the Digital Asset Framework Act emerging as key issues.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economy Lee Hyoung-il said during a parliamentary audit on Oct. 6 that the government would broadly consult lawmakers, experts and the industry on cryptocurrency taxation.

Former National Tax Service Commissioner Lim Kwang-hyun said at an Oct. 13 parliamentary audit that detailed guidance on cryptocurrency taxation standards would be announced next month following consultations with the Ministry of Finance and Economy.

Meanwhile, work on the Digital Asset Framework Act, widely regarded as a prerequisite for taxation, has been delayed from the government-drafting stage.

The Financial Services Commission said in a written response to lawmaker Park Min-kyu on Oct. 15 that consultations with relevant agencies and experts were taking time because the framework act would comprehensively regulate service providers, markets and users.

Park questioned whether the legislation could pass by year-end, saying the government had yet to clarify either its submission schedule or its policy direction on key issues, including ownership limits for major shareholders of cryptocurrency exchanges.

With lawmakers from both the ruling and opposition parties introducing bills to postpone cryptocurrency taxation, access to overseas transaction data and the legislative timetable for the Digital Asset Framework Act are expected to be central issues in parliamentary debate.
