The European Union is assessing critical-mineral cooperation with Vietnam as Chinese export restrictions disrupted European supply chains in 2025 and strengthened the case for finding suppliers beyond China.

A June 2026 document prepared by the EU delegation in Hanoi identified Vietnam as a potential supplier, citing its reserves of rare earths and tungsten. Vietnam’s exports to Europe have so far consisted largely of tungsten and antimony, both used in weapons manufacturing.

The minerals also matter beyond defense. They are important to AI data centers, reindustrialization and electrification, extending supply concerns across several industries.

Vietnam’s [2025 trade totals](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/business/26752>) were $475.04 billion in goods exports and $455.01 billion in imports. China was the country’s largest import source, at $186 billion.

The European Commission is exploring ways to work with Vietnam on critical minerals.
