# China’s Commerce Ministry, Eight Other Departments Call for AI in Manufacturing

China’s Ministry of Commerce and eight other departments called for deeper artificial intelligence use across manufacturing in a joint policy opinion issued Oct. 19, alongside plans to expand smart-goods supply.

The plan spans product research and development, design, manufacturing and marketing. It also aims to increase the supply of smartphones, computers, home products, wearable devices and robots. The opinion encourages research, development and use of smart products based on secure, reliable open-source operating systems.

Other measures include upgrading historical classic industries and developing classic products. The policy calls for building a portfolio of Chinese consumer brands and identifying high-quality consumer products associated with independent innovation. It also calls for technology-driven agriculture and improved quality and efficiency for high-quality specialty agricultural products. Time-honored brand companies are to be supported in using modern production technologies for product innovation.
