> The delegation met Chinese central bank and finance officials during the week of Oct. 12. China’s Oct. 15 G20 readout listed meetings with eight countries but no U.S. bilateral with its finance minister.

U.S. officials raised market access for Mastercard, Citigroup and Visa during at least two meetings with Chinese officials in Bangkok in the week of Oct. 12.

Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Francis Brooke led the delegation. The meetings involved officials from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) and China’s Ministry of Finance.

China’s Ministry of Finance dated the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors meeting in Bangkok to Oct. 15. Its public account listed Finance Minister Lan Fo’an’s bilateral meetings with officials from eight countries, but not the United States. The account did not address separate meetings involving the PBOC.

A NetsUnion joint venture handles Mastercard’s domestic card transactions in China; regulators approved it for domestic clearing in November 2023, and it began processing transactions on May 9, 2024.
