> Voters favored remaining in Canada. The vote did not decide independence directly; the alternative was to begin a process for a later referendum.

Alberta voters rejected a step toward separation from Canada, reducing uncertainty over the country's main oil-producing province and strengthening Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's position on national unity.

The ballot offered a choice between remaining a Canadian province and starting a legal process that could lead to a later referendum on independence. Voters favored remaining. This was not a direct vote on whether Alberta should become independent.

Carney opposed the separatist push. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the vote but also backed staying in Canada. The result gives both leaders a clear public decision on the proposed next step, while leaving Alberta's current status intact.

Pre-vote polling showed roughly one-fifth of Albertans supported separation. The referendum outcome is a setback for organizers seeking another vote, though it does not erase that support.

Alberta is Canada's main oil-producing province, giving its political status significance beyond provincial politics. Its voters have declined the proposed route toward another independence ballot.
