> Proposed measures include high-performance AI checks of government systems and expanded incident-response support for companies.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told ministers Oct. 26 to quickly consider and coordinate measures toward an emergency cybersecurity package following cyberattacks and major data leaks at Japanese companies.

The government aims to compile the package within the next week. Ministers are to coordinate the proposals, including fiscal measures.

Takaichi assigned the industry minister to draw on the expertise and personnel of the Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan (IPA), for simulated attack tests by leading cybersecurity specialists to find and address system weaknesses. Separately, ministries are to conduct early vulnerability checks of government systems using high-performance AI and expertise from Japan AI Safety Institute, under the digital minister’s lead.

For businesses, Takaichi called for broader consultation services through IPA and police, more help for smaller companies and faster deployment of a network to monitor cyberattacks across supply chains. She also called for a mechanism to bring private-sector cybersecurity specialists into incident response from its early stages through recovery.

For attacks whose circumstances have been clarified, Takaichi said the government would strategically select and carry out response measures, including accessing and neutralizing servers or other equipment used by attackers. The digital and cybersecurity minister is to coordinate with allied and like-minded countries and overseas institutions to identify attackers.
