Businesses tied to Donald Trump and his family are hiring lawyers and lobbyists as Democratic lawmakers seek information about potential government contracts, favorable policy treatment and conflicts of interest involving the companies.

Lawmakers have asked World Liberty Financial and 1789 Capital to provide information. The businesses connected to Trump and his family span cryptocurrency, venture capital and prediction markets.

If Democrats win a majority in the midterm elections, a congressional inquiry could still face hurdles. Those include difficulty compelling people outside the United States to provide testimony or documents. It is also uncertain whether the Justice Department or other federal agencies would take further action.

The businesses and Trump family have said their commercial activities comply with the law.
