President Donald Trump said Tuesday the United States is not preparing an immediate strike on Iran, reducing near-term escalation concerns for oil markets while leaving the military option open.

During a six-minute phone interview, Trump described himself as satisfied with the current standoff and said Washington was getting what it wanted. He said the United States was ready to act if needed, but suggested a strike might not be necessary.

Trump said indirect negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program are continuing. He also said he would not disclose any attack plans in advance.

He forecast a sharp decline in energy prices after the U.S. midterm elections. Trump also claimed that oil moving through the Strait of Hormuz now exceeds prewar levels and that a U.S. blockade of Iranian ports is hurting Tehran’s economy.

His remarks leave military action possible while putting nuclear talks and the blockade at the center of the U.S.-Iran standoff.
