Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterms, flipping seven Republican-held Senate seats and at least 24 House districts. Republicans had no pickups in congressional, gubernatorial or state legislative races in the results available Wednesday.

Democrats also captured five governorships and gained control of as many as 12 state legislative chambers. Their wins included the Texas House, both chambers of Wisconsin’s Legislature, North Carolina’s House and the Pennsylvania Senate. The party gained a majority of U.S. governorships for the first time since 2010, following victories in Georgia, Iowa, Ohio and Nevada.

The results shift governing power in Washington and state capitals for the final two years of President Donald Trump’s term. Vote counting was still underway late Wednesday, with nine House races, two Senate contests and two gubernatorial races uncalled, so the totals could change.
