Democrats plan to put technology companies under scrutiny after winning control of Congress, and Sen. Ed Markey warned executives to expect a large subpoena effort when lawmakers return in January 2027.

Markey, a member of the Senate Commerce Committee, said: “They are going to need to plant new forests for all of the subpoenas we’ll be printing.”

During the midterm campaign, Democrats challenged technology companies’ political influence and the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence. Their concerns included data centers’ electricity use, safeguards for AI products and technology executives’ ties to President Donald Trump.

Rep. Robert Garcia, the expected incoming chair of the House Oversight Committee, said he plans to scrutinize Trump’s business dealings and corporate corruption. The new Congress convenes in January 2027.
