Block reached an agreement in principle with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to pay about $764 million to resolve an investigation into its anti-money laundering program, a sum above its latest quarterly net income.

The agreement in principle was reached in October and would take the form of a deferred prosecution agreement. The DOJ would defer for three years a charge alleging Block failed to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program under the Bank Secrecy Act. If Block meets the agreement's terms during that period, the DOJ would move to dismiss the charge.

The proposed resolution carries an estimated gross penalty of about $964 million, with credits for earlier regulatory settlements bringing the amount to about $764 million. Block had set aside $764 million as of Sept. 30. The amount exceeds Block's $565 million in third-quarter net income.

A final agreement and court approval are still required. Block operates Cash App and Square, its merchant payments platform. Federal regulators began investigating the company in 2023. In April 2025, Block paid New York's financial regulator $40 million after the regulator alleged anti-money laundering lapses at Cash App.
