Greece’s 10% cryptocurrency tax can recognize gains when holders spend tokens or contribute them to company capital, extending the levy beyond sales for euros when it begins in 2027.

Parliament passed the measure Thursday, Nov. 5. The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2027, following [Parliament’s passage of the tax](<https://www.tokenpost.com/news/regulation/50477>).

The tax applies to net gains, calculated as the difference between an asset’s acquisition price and transfer price. Related transaction costs can be included. Annual net gains of €500 or less are exempt; if gains exceed that threshold, the 10% rate applies to the full annual gain.

Using crypto to buy goods or services can trigger recognition of a taxable gain. The same applies to contributing crypto to cover or increase company capital. The tax is based on the gain from the transfer, not the full amount spent or contributed.

Holding an asset as its value rises does not by itself trigger tax, and swapping one crypto asset for another is not a taxable event. A crypto loss exceeding €500 in a tax year can be carried forward for up to five years, but can offset only later crypto capital gains.

Starting in 2027, crypto purchases will fall under Greece’s existing source-of-funds checks, but they will not incur a separate purchase tax. Buyers may need to show that the money used came from declared income or other lawful capital.
