> Annual net gains up to 500 euros are exempt. The law also allows a 12-month window for voluntary disclosure of previously undeclared gains.

Greece’s Parliament approved a crypto tax framework Thursday, Nov. 5, that will tax individuals’ gains from crypto transfers at 10% and staking and decentralized finance income at 15% beginning Jan. 1, 2027.

The first 500 euros of annual net gains are exempt, but if net gains exceed that threshold, the full amount becomes taxable. The framework applies tax when crypto is transferred; unrealized gains from simply holding assets are not taxed.

Using crypto to pay for goods or services also counts as a taxable transfer. Staking, lending and returns from providing liquidity to decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols are treated as interest income and face the 15% rate.

People with previously undeclared crypto gains can report them voluntarily during the 12 months after the relevant rules take effect. They avoid additional penalties and interest if they pay the tax within 60 days of filing.

The measure gives Greece its first comprehensive tax framework for crypto assets. The rules are scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, 2027.
