# Pi Network Announces Protocol 27 Completion, Sets Oct. 16 Upgrade

Pi Network announced the completion of its Protocol 27 upgrade on Sept. 25 and scheduled the Protocol 28 Mainnet upgrade for Oct. 16, extending a sequence of network changes that began in February.

Pi Testnet has upgraded to Protocol 28. The update is designed to reduce delays involving transaction data, allow developers to update groups of smart contracts simultaneously and provide a safer way to modify stored data as applications evolve.

Node operators must update their software by Oct. 13. The Mainnet upgrade is scheduled for Oct. 16.

Protocol 27 was initially targeted for Sept. 15 and followed earlier versions 19.6, 20.2, 22, 25 and 26. Several upgrades in the sequence experienced delays. Pi Network did not confirm completion by the original deadline, although users speculated that the upgrade had gone live.

The protocol changes come as Pi (PI), Pi Network’s native token, remains volatile. PI fell below $0.083 over the past week before reaching a multi-week high of $0.094. It later declined to $0.085 before trading above $0.09 after gaining 5.5% over 24 hours.

Pi’s market capitalization moved back above $1 billion, placing it among the 65 largest cryptocurrencies by market value. The next scheduled network milestone is the Protocol 28 Mainnet upgrade on Oct. 16.
