# Solana Activates Alpenglow Consensus Upgrade on Devnet

Solana’s Alpenglow consensus upgrade has activated on Devnet, giving developers a pre-mainnet environment to test a system designed to sharply reduce transaction finality times.

Alpenglow targets finality of about 150 milliseconds, compared with roughly 12.8 seconds under Solana’s existing TowerBFT consensus system. Finality is the point at which a blockchain transaction is treated as irreversible.

The upgrade allows validators to exchange votes directly and reach consensus in one or two voting rounds. Its Devnet activation follows the move to Testnet on Sept. 24.

The 150-millisecond figure remains a simulated target and has not been validated under real market conditions. No mainnet activation date has been set.

The Devnet stage advances Solana’s previously outlined Alpenglow rollout, which is designed to replace TowerBFT while preserving the network’s existing application environment.
