Anthropic is in early negotiations to lease up to 1 gigawatt of data-center capacity from Stream Data Centers, a potential expansion that would require at least $40 billion in capital investment.

The Claude developer is discussing becoming a direct tenant in Stream projects controlled by Apollo Global Management. The arrangement would give Anthropic dedicated infrastructure as it seeks to reduce its reliance on cloud providers.

The planned facilities could house tensor processing units designed by Google and Broadcom. They could also support Nvidia GPUs and other artificial-intelligence chips, depending on the final hardware selection.

Deploying 1 gigawatt of compute capacity would require at least $40 billion in capital spending regardless of the chip configuration. Stream has operated for 27 years and has data-center projects in multiple U.S. locations.

The discussions remain at an early stage, and no final lease or hardware decision has been announced.
