THORChain rejected responsibility for processing funds linked to the Bitget theft, arguing that its decentralized and permissionless structure leaves no central authority to approve or block transactions.

The protocol said its design is comparable to Bitcoin, Ethereum and BNB Chain, questioning why those networks — or THORChain — should be held responsible for handling funds identified as stolen. It also addressed OKX CEO Star and Bitget CEO Gracy Chen in the discussion.

The response followed the theft of funds from Bitget. The incident has focused attention on whether decentralized cross-chain protocols should restrict transactions tied to publicly identified attacker addresses.

Some community members challenged THORChain’s position by pointing to a previous attack that led the network to suspend services for 39 days. They argued that the protocol’s earlier response appeared inconsistent with its current defense of permissionless operation.
