# Shopify Expands Browser-Based AI Agents to Checkout on Merchant Sites

Shopify is expanding browser-based artificial intelligence agents from product discovery and cart building into checkout, giving authorized agents a structured way to complete purchases across eligible merchant sites.

The company announced Sept. 28 that agents can use WebMCP to inspect checkout details, update information such as a buyer’s address or delivery option, and submit an order after receiving authorization. The capability also supports Shop Pay.

The update adds three tools: get_checkout, update_checkout and complete_checkout. Together, they allow agents to work with checkout information directly instead of relying on screenshots or scraping webpages.

Gil Greenberg, a Shopify staff product manager working on agentic commerce, said the tools use Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol to provide structured commerce facts, required disclosures and handoff requirements.

“If your agent is operating in the buyer’s browser, use WebMCP tools provided on storefront and checkout to efficiently complete order placement, instead of navigating HTML built for humans,” Greenberg wrote.

Shopify also operates a hosted Model Context Protocol server for server-to-server agent interactions. WebMCP is designed for agents operating inside a buyer’s browser, while both systems use the Universal Commerce Protocol for product discovery, cart building and checkout.

AI agents including Muse and Instinct have direct partnerships with Shopify for agentic commerce. The checkout expansion follows Shopify’s earlier work with Muse to enable agentic checkout through Shop Pay.
