# Trump Rejects Integrating U.S. and Chinese Artificial Intelligence Efforts

President Donald Trump rejected combining U.S. and Chinese artificial-intelligence efforts, saying the United States has a substantial lead and should preserve its advantage.

“I would rather not integrate because we’re leading by a lot,” Trump told reporters Sept. 26. He said the United States led China by at least one year and possibly 1½ years.

“When you’re leading, you don’t open it up to each other,” Trump said.

Trump’s comments followed his Sept. 23–25 summit in Washington with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The meeting did not produce a joint AI-development agreement.

The countries also set up a forum focused on the potential benefits and dangers of superintelligent systems. The countries also agreed to create a bilateral communication channel for incidents involving the technology.

The next exchange under the dialogue is due by November 2026, leaving the two governments with a limited forum for communication while maintaining separate approaches to AI development.
