OpenAI launched Dots on Sept. 29 as persistent artificial-intelligence agents for workplace tasks, extending ChatGPT into software that can operate continuously with limited day-to-day direction. Powered by GPT-6 Astra, Dots operate on their own cloud computer and browser. They can connect to more than 4,000 applications, communicate through ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams, retain context across channels and request user input when necessary. The first Dot is included at no additional charge for eligible Pro and Business Premium users. Enterprise, Education and Healthcare customers can access Dots through a beta program when a workspace administrator enables the feature. Access is off by default for those plans. ChatGPT Space, also introduced with the launch, gives teammates, ChatGPT and Dots a shared workspace built around common knowledge. The feature is available on desktop and the web for Pro, Business and Enterprise customers. Plans include extended ChatGPT limits for Dots during the first month. Tasks launched or managed through Codex or ChatGPT Work still count toward usage limits. Dots can work in the background and handle multiple tasks without users directing every step. Their controls include custom rules, activity monitoring, permission settings and approval requirements for certain sensitive actions. Specialist Dots are also being previewed with separate identities, credentials, IT-managed hardware and connections to company systems of record. GPT-6 Astra is designed for computer use, browsing, software engineering and professional work, with monitoring and other safeguards for deployments that use external tools.
